Maternity-Friendly Styles

I’m going to begin this post by clarifying a main point, none of the clothes posted below are maternity clothes.  During my first trimester, the last thing on my mind was shopping and clothes.  I was truly in a fashion rut and I just wanted to get through the days.  It was during my second trimester that I started to feel like myself again. I had a cute little baby bump and I was glad that my clothes still fit.  However, I still had no desire to go shopping, but I began to browse online for maternity clothes.  To say I was uninspired with the clothes I found would be an understatement.  To be honest, I found the most of the clothes boring, matronly, and they all pretty much looked the same.  However, I found an awesome brand of maternity leggings called Preggo Leggings and I have say, they are the most comfortable pairs of leggings I have ever worn. The soft and stretchy design fits comfortably over my growing belly and It stays up.  I began them around 28th weeks and they have been a lifesaver.  I stumbled upon HATCH and found some really cute options.  The only issue I had with the pieces I found was that I could not justify paying the price for clothes I would only wear for a few months.  I also found an online store called NINE IN THE MIRROR, who offers maternity clothes from designers such as Valentino, Alexander Wang, Lanvin, 3.1 Phillip Lim and so on.  What I like the most about NINE IN THE MIRROR is that they offer clothes you can wear pre and post-partum, but again, the price turned me off. ASOS actually have cute maternity clothes at affordable prices, but I’m more interested in pieces I could invest in and wear again after giving birth.

So I went on a mission to find cute clothes that are maternity-friendly from some of my favorite stores, clothes that I could still wear postpartum, and most importantly, clothes I could invest in without feeling guilty.  I call them maternity-friendly because they have room to accommodate a growing baby bump.  The dress I wore for my baby shower (see “Oh Baby”) is from Banana Republic.  Below are some of my favorites from Anthropologie, Banana Republic, BCBGMAXAZRIA and Neiman Marcus (Halston Heritage and Tanya Taylor Designs).

Hi everyone!  It’s been a while.  Took some time off to focus on other aspects of my life. So many things have changed since my last blog post.  We are having a BABY!  I am so excited, but to be honest, a little nervous.  I wanted to share pictures from my amazing tea party themed baby shower.  It was organized by my wonderful mother-in-law and sister-in-law at the CakeBakeShop in Indianapolis.  I’ll be keeping you all posted on my pregnancy journey, what worked for me, and what I’ve learned so far.

Modern Lace

We were shopping on 5th Avenue in NYC when we came across this dress in the window at Karen Millen.  The modern and geometric lace detail of the dress made me fall in love with it.  I was first introduced to Karen Millen by a good friend of mine while in college, but their clothes were a little pricey for my college student budget.  I also like how the lace is layered over contrasting blue fabric. I wanted the dress to be the main focus, so I added a black clutch and black block-heeled sandals.

The inspiration for my outfit came from the jumpsuit below featured on Antonio Berardi’s pre-fall 2016 collection.  There is nothing like a good jumpsuit that fits you in all the right places.  I prefer the sweetheart neckline of the H&M piece and I love how the bottom fits loosely before tapering off.  I completed my look with black and gold accessories.

New York State of Mind

I just returned from an amazing trip to New York City. I can totally understand why people move to this crazy, but exciting place. It took me a few hours to adjust to the sensory overload, but after that I was hooked. The loud noises, crowded spaces, visually stimulating landscape, and fresh air mixed with the aroma from food trucks and street corner garbage became my new normal and I loved it. John and I went to the Big Apple primarily for a wedding, but we extended our trip for a few days. We stayed at the Grand Hyatt on 42nd Street in Manhattan. Our hotel was conveniently located next to Grand Central Station and across from the Chrysler building. We grabbed a quick bite from a nearby Grecian food truck and explored Grand Central Terminal. We hurried back to the hotel to get ready for a party organized by Katie and Colin, the amazing bride and groom, at The Pavilion in Union Square Park.

The following day, we had breakfast at Sandwicherie, went shopping on 5th Avenue, ate at Eataly (by the Flatiron building), and walked around Madison Square Park. A bus took us to the Brooklyn Botanical Garden, where the beautiful wedding took place.

The next day we tried to fit as many NYC landmarks as we could in one day. Started the day with a spicy hot dog from a street vendor. We visited Bryant Park, New York Public Library, Times Square, Radio City Music Hall, Rockefeller Center and Central Park. We had a late lunch at Rue 57 Brasserie Parisienne et Sushi Bar and took a taxi back to the hotel. We ended the day at Sakagura, a tapas-style Japanese Restaurant in Midtown. The place was hard to find, but it was definitely worth it.

My overall experience on this trip was fantastic. I visited places that I’ve always wanted to see. I met some of John’s East Coast relatives for the first time and I immediately fell in love with them. I had some of the most amazing food, and it was great to witness the union of Katie and Colin.

It’s been fun NYC! Goodbye until we meet again.

My inspiration for this look came from Stella McCartney Spring RTW 2016 collection. The collection had a good mix of knitwear, athletic inspired designs, bright colored strips and checks, but what stood out to me was her modern take on the classic suit. I particularly liked the elongated proportions of the vests featured on the runway. I happen to own a similar black vest from Banana Republic. I styled mine with skinny pants, my favorite hat and went with a different colored shoe to add a pop of color.

A weekend getaway

John and I recently returned from Connecticut to attend a friend’s wedding. We flew into Hartford, but stayed at the New Haven Hotel in New Haven. Prior to the trip, we planned to explore Yale University, and I particularly wanted to see the Yale University Art Gallery and East Rock Park. Little did I know that our plans would be derailed by unforeseen circumstances. John and I were unusually forgetfull on this trip. We forgot a tooth brush, contact lenses, a lint roller for dark clothes and cologne. I was miserable at the airport and on the plane because I forgot to bring a sweater/jacket because I’m always cold. As soon as we checked into our hotel, we went in search of a CVS/Walgreens to buy the things we needed. We had been up since 7:00am and our last meal was at 9:00am, so we were both tired and hungry. After getting lost and walking around for sometime, we finally found a Walgreens but it was a small one and it didn’t sell a lint roller. By this time, it was already 4:30pm and we had to meet up with our friends for a get-together at 5pm. We were directed to another Walgreens about 2 blocks away, so we set off and eventually found it and purchased what we needed. We rushed back to meet up with our friends at Cask Republic for cocktails. Our day had some hiccups, but it ended well.

The next day, the wedding ceremony didn’t begin until 5pm, so I thought we could go explore Yale University after breakfast. John got up to shower, but something was wrong with the water pipes. It literally sounded like someone was drilling next door when he ran the hot water. We were eventually moved to a different room and by then, I had no desire to go anywhere. We got ready for the wedding and a bus took us to the picturesque town of Guilford. Guilford was everything I thought a New England town would be, but the Yacht club really blew me away. The wedding ceremony was heartfelt, and the bride and groom looked beautiful. It really was a fun wedding, and even my little stumble on the dance floor did not dampen my good mood.

So, let me tell you about my stumble. John and I were dancing and Rihanna’s song “We found love” came on. As the song reached the crescendo, I imagined I was at a rave and started banging and swinging my head. Before I knew it, I lost my balance and started to fall.  John, Steve, Rachel and Brandon tried to catch me, but luckily a perfectly placed chair broke my fall. We all had a good laugh and didn’t let that stop us. I got back on the dance floor and danced the night away with John and our friends. To top it all off, an older female guest came up to me at the end of the night and said, “I have been watching you all night and you’re the best dancer here!”

Congrats to Alex and Karen!

I love to sing and dance around the house. My only audience member, John, is forever concerned that I could hurt myself one day if I’m not careful as I prance, spin and leap around the house. I know it’s too late to fulfill my dream of becoming a contemporary dancer, but I can at least dress like one. I have been looking for a simple wrap top for a while now and I absolutely love this one from American Apparel. I wore an undershirt under my top for obvious reasons. I plan to order another color, but I will order a medium this time instead of a small. If you have read some of my previous posts, you would know how much I love pleated skirts. I ordered my true size and it fits like a high-waisted skirt before flaring out. I would recommend ordering a size up if you prefer for it to sit lower around your waist. I went with neutral accessories to complete my colorful look.

Summer Bloom🌼🌼🌼

It officially feels like summer and what better way to celebrate summer fashion than with a flowery skirt and a shoulder baring top.  My inspiration for this style pairing came from Oscar de la Renta Spring 2016 runway collection where carnation prints were prevalently displayed on dresses, skirts and blouses.  I recently read that carnations were Oscar de la Renta’s favorite flowers, so it made perfect sense for Peter Copping to feature carnations in his designs as an homage his predecessor who passed away in 2014. The daisy prints on my skirt are even more stunning in person.  Each petal is embroidered onto a chiffon material and the fit-and-flare silhouette of the skirt accentuated my waist before flaring out into a full skirt.  I went with a top that deviated slightly from the trendy off-the-shoulder tops.  Now to complete my look, I added strappy sandals, ladylike bag and of course, sunglasses.

My Take On An Old Classic

The universal layering piece everyone has in their closet is a cardigan. The cardigan featured below is my all time favorite layering piece. I fell in love with it at first sight a few years ago and immediately purchased it at a local LOFT store. I love the pretty chiffon petals attached to the front and the slim cut of the design. I was inspired to restyle this cardigan after reading about ways to wear a cardigan without looking frumpy in the May 2016 issue of InStyle magazine. I chose to wear mine over a drop waist navy dress. I added a skinny belt to draw attention to my waist. I also like it without a belt for a more relaxed fit.
