New York State of Mind

I just returned from an amazing trip to New York City. I can totally understand why people move to this crazy, but exciting place. It took me a few hours to adjust to the sensory overload, but after that I was hooked. The loud noises, crowded spaces, visually stimulating landscape, and fresh air mixed with the aroma from food trucks and street corner garbage became my new normal and I loved it. John and I went to the Big Apple primarily for a wedding, but we extended our trip for a few days. We stayed at the Grand Hyatt on 42nd Street in Manhattan. Our hotel was conveniently located next to Grand Central Station and across from the Chrysler building. We grabbed a quick bite from a nearby Grecian food truck and explored Grand Central Terminal. We hurried back to the hotel to get ready for a party organized by Katie and Colin, the amazing bride and groom, at The Pavilion in Union Square Park.

The following day, we had breakfast at Sandwicherie, went shopping on 5th Avenue, ate at Eataly (by the Flatiron building), and walked around Madison Square Park. A bus took us to the Brooklyn Botanical Garden, where the beautiful wedding took place.

The next day we tried to fit as many NYC landmarks as we could in one day. Started the day with a spicy hot dog from a street vendor. We visited Bryant Park, New York Public Library, Times Square, Radio City Music Hall, Rockefeller Center and Central Park. We had a late lunch at Rue 57 Brasserie Parisienne et Sushi Bar and took a taxi back to the hotel. We ended the day at Sakagura, a tapas-style Japanese Restaurant in Midtown. The place was hard to find, but it was definitely worth it.

My overall experience on this trip was fantastic. I visited places that I’ve always wanted to see. I met some of John’s East Coast relatives for the first time and I immediately fell in love with them. I had some of the most amazing food, and it was great to witness the union of Katie and Colin.

It’s been fun NYC! Goodbye until we meet again.

A weekend getaway

John and I recently returned from Connecticut to attend a friend’s wedding. We flew into Hartford, but stayed at the New Haven Hotel in New Haven. Prior to the trip, we planned to explore Yale University, and I particularly wanted to see the Yale University Art Gallery and East Rock Park. Little did I know that our plans would be derailed by unforeseen circumstances. John and I were unusually forgetfull on this trip. We forgot a tooth brush, contact lenses, a lint roller for dark clothes and cologne. I was miserable at the airport and on the plane because I forgot to bring a sweater/jacket because I’m always cold. As soon as we checked into our hotel, we went in search of a CVS/Walgreens to buy the things we needed. We had been up since 7:00am and our last meal was at 9:00am, so we were both tired and hungry. After getting lost and walking around for sometime, we finally found a Walgreens but it was a small one and it didn’t sell a lint roller. By this time, it was already 4:30pm and we had to meet up with our friends for a get-together at 5pm. We were directed to another Walgreens about 2 blocks away, so we set off and eventually found it and purchased what we needed. We rushed back to meet up with our friends at Cask Republic for cocktails. Our day had some hiccups, but it ended well.

The next day, the wedding ceremony didn’t begin until 5pm, so I thought we could go explore Yale University after breakfast. John got up to shower, but something was wrong with the water pipes. It literally sounded like someone was drilling next door when he ran the hot water. We were eventually moved to a different room and by then, I had no desire to go anywhere. We got ready for the wedding and a bus took us to the picturesque town of Guilford. Guilford was everything I thought a New England town would be, but the Yacht club really blew me away. The wedding ceremony was heartfelt, and the bride and groom looked beautiful. It really was a fun wedding, and even my little stumble on the dance floor did not dampen my good mood.

So, let me tell you about my stumble. John and I were dancing and Rihanna’s song “We found love” came on. As the song reached the crescendo, I imagined I was at a rave and started banging and swinging my head. Before I knew it, I lost my balance and started to fall.  John, Steve, Rachel and Brandon tried to catch me, but luckily a perfectly placed chair broke my fall. We all had a good laugh and didn’t let that stop us. I got back on the dance floor and danced the night away with John and our friends. To top it all off, an older female guest came up to me at the end of the night and said, “I have been watching you all night and you’re the best dancer here!”

Congrats to Alex and Karen!

Viva Las Vegas

I recently returned from a wonderful trip to Las Vegas. I will always have a positive association with that glitzy city because John and I got engaged there in 2011. Since this was our second trip, we wanted to focus more on enjoying the moment instead of visiting every hotel or attraction. We stayed at the Palazzo hotel, which is connected to the Venetian hotel.

Day 1: We explored both hotels, went shopping at Grand Canal Shoppes and had dinner at LAVO Italian Restaurant and Casino Club. I really liked the asian-themed decorations to commemorate the lunar new year. The food at LAVO was definitely the best Italian food I’ve ever had. I’ll even quote John. He said, “This rivals the food I had in Rome”. We will definitely be going back there on our next visit.

Day 2: After having breakfast at the Grand Luxe Cafe, we explored the Mirage hotel since we didn’t get the chance to do that on our last visit. We watched the Arsenal versus Barcelona football (soccer) game at the Lagasse’s stadium. John is a huge fan of Arsenal football club based in London and of course, we (“we” because I’m a fan by association) couldn’t miss one of the biggest games of the season. I actually don’t mind watching football games because John’s passion is so infectious, but I mostly watch the last 10-15 minutes of the game. Arsenal lost to the most successful (and probably the best) football team in the world, but it was a close game. I let him watch his game and he went with me to see Zumanity Cirque du Soleil at New York-New York hotel. Zumanity is not your typical cirque du soleil show. It has the usual acrobatic moves, but it is for mature audiences only.

Day 3: Started the day with breakfast at Mon Ami Gabi Restaurant inside the Paris hotel. This is another restaurant that we’ll be revisiting on our next trip to Vegas because of the wonderful food, the great view of the strip, and friendly staff. At noon, we had afternoon tea at the Tea Lounge inside the Mandarin Oriental hotel. I can’t adequately express how wonderful our experience was while having tea, but I’ll try. The Tea lounge is located on the 23rd floor and there are walls of floor-to-ceiling windows that provide a view of the strip and the mountains beyond. I’m not sure if they had an essential oil diffuser, but it smelled so amazing in there. I can tell you that I was in a complete state of relaxation throughout our stay. We ordered the Classic English Afternoon Tea which comes with your choice of loose leaf tea, savory delicacies, scones and pastries. Everything was delicious, but my favorite had to be the cherry scones with pineapple jam. We had dinner at TAO Asian Restaurant inside the Venetian hotel. I really love their Tao-tini cocktail drink so much that I had two of them. What better way to conclude this trip than for the Venezias to visit the Venetian hotel?

Day 4: The Paris Baguette, overlooking St. Mark’s Square at the Grand Canal Shoppes, has awesome pastries and savory sandwiches. We had coffee and breakfast there before heading back home.

New Orleans, Y’all

I recently returned from a trip to New Orleans for the Academy of Optometry meeting. I had a poster presentation to show my ongoing research at Indiana University School of Optometry for my Master’s degree. It was exciting to present my research, but I was most excited to see one of my dearest friend, Kim. Kim and I were inseparable during school. She moved back to California after school and I haven’t seen her since her wedding last year. Although we stay in touch, it’s not the same as seeing each other. I also got to know her little sister and my fellow namesake, Linda. Kim, Linda and I explored French Quarters, shopped at the Outlet Collection at Riverwalk, had beignets at Cafe Du Monde, had drinks at The rusty nail and ate at Felix’s Restaurant and Oyster bar on Bourbon Street. Tried the chargrilled oysters…so yummy, love the red beans and the jambalaya, but wasn’t a big fan of the crawfish étouffée. Before I knew it, it was time to return home. I was a little sad to leave Kim, but I know that the next time we see each other, we will be celebrating another milestone in life😊

Out to the Ballgame

Hi everyone! John and I took a day trip to Cincinnati last Sunday. We went mostly for a baseball game between the St. Louis Cardinals and Cincinnati Reds, but we met up with some friends afterwards across the river in Covington, KY. Downtown Covington is simply delightful, especially along the Ohio River. I kept my style simple and chic with a white tee, faux-leather pants and striped ballet flats.

Weekend in Atlanta : Polka dots & Orange

Hello everyone! Hope you all had a lovely weekend. I just returned from a weekend trip to Atlanta for my aunt’s 50th birthday party. Even though Carmel, Indiana is now my home, I always enjoy going back to Atlanta to see my family and friends. There is always a sense of fulfillment every time I visit and as I leave, I always look forward to my next visit. This is the second time I’ve paired orange and polka dots together. I just love the contrast of bold orange color against feminine and romantic polka dots. This time, the pairing comes in form of a black and ivory cutout back A-line dress and orange beaded necklace. I finished up the look with a black Croc-Embossed pumps and black clutch. Polka dots was one of the trend on the Spring 2014 runway. Sportmax, Dolce and Gabbana as well as Burberry all featured polka dots in their Spring 2014 collection. Enjoy…

Wedding, Nigerian style

Hi everyone! For those of you who don’t know, I am Nigerian-American. I was born in Atlanta, but I spent my childhood in Nigeria before moving back to the States. I had the opportunity to travel back to Nigeria during memorial day weekend for my older sister’s wedding. I’ll briefly explain Nigerian (Christian/Yoruba) wedding process below. It is usually a 3-day event that begins with a traditional wedding ceremony on Friday, followed by a church service and reception on Saturday. Sunday is reserved for thanksgiving service at the groom’s church. A terrible storm delayed my trip and prevented me from arriving in time for the traditional wedding. Nonetheless, I arrived safely on Friday night after flying over 14 hours. The outfit I wore was designed by my sister. It’s a two piece (a top and the bottom part is wrapped around your waist) in gold Guipure lace and orange head wrap (gele). I included pictures of the beautiful bride in her traditional wedding clothes, the bride and groom on Saturday and some of my childhood friends who came for the wedding. Enjoy…

Resort Wear

Hello Everyone!

Last week’s post was about my day trip to LA. This week’s post will conclude the summary of my amazing trip to San Diego. John and I started our vacation by visiting the world-famous San Diego Zoo, Santa Ann for a friend’s wedding and Chula Vista for another friend’s wedding shower. We also went to La Jolla Cove, Coronado Island and Gaslamp Quarter in downtown San Diego. My style inspiration on this vacation didn’t come just from one designer, it stemmed from a combination of some of my favorite looks from Resort 2014 runway collection. Resort wear tends to be more commercial, in order words, more appealing to everyone. Enjoy…
